ROOT CANAL TREATMENT

Of all dental procedures, perhaps the most misunderstood and the cause of much apprehension is Root Canal Treatment.

With modern dental techniques and pain management options, root canal treatment can be completed quickly and with minimal to no discomfort.

A tooth may require root canal treatment because of severe decay, gum disease or the tooth has sustained extensive damage in an accident. All of this can cause infection of the tooths pulp (nerves and blood vessels) requiring its removal.

The procedure involves isolating the tooth with a rubber sheet called a ‘dam’ to prevent any infection from spreading. Then any tooth decay is removed and a channel is created so the pulp can be removed using very fine instruments.

The root canals are re-shaped and thoroughly cleaned and once the tooth is free of any signs of infection, the root canal is filled with a special compound.

Most teeth that have undergone root canal treatment are restored using a crown. Depending on the location of the tooth this may be a porcelain crown for front teeth or a gold or alloy based crown for back teeth that require additional strength.

If you are apprehensive about any dental treatments we encourage you to talk with our dental team who can explain the procedure fully to alleviate your concerns.
