Fashions may come and go, but a healthy, attractive smile can be yours for life, provided you look after it properly. Numerous studies have shown people react positively to a warm smile, helping you make that all-important good first impression when meeting someone new for the first time. When you know your smile looks good, it helps increase self-confidence. In comparison, someone who feels less confident about the appearance of their teeth will often try to hide their mouth. Even if you have been guilty of neglecting your dental health in the past, it's never too late to begin taking care of your teeth. We've listed a few easy tips below to help get you started.

1.      Brush and Floss Every Day

Brushing your teeth at least twice a day and daily flossing is essential. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and clean your teeth using circular motions, thoroughly cleaning each tooth surface. Make sure you floss daily to eliminate plaque and food debris in those hard-to-reach areas between your teeth. Brushing and flossing is the easiest way to maintain healthy teeth and gums and will take less than 10 minutes a day to complete.

2.      Maintain a Healthy Diet

You need a healthy balanced diet to ensure your teeth, gums, and jawbone remain strong and can fight infection and disease more successfully. Try to limit your consumption of sugary foods, instead concentrating on plenty of protein-rich foods and fresh fruits and vegetables.

3.      Drink Plenty of Water

Many of us are guilty of not drinking any water until we feel thirsty, by which time we are already dehydrated. The human body is around 60% water, so ensure you keep well hydrated by sipping on water frequently. Adequate hydration ensures you can produce plenty of saliva, keeping your mouth moister and more comfortable and helping to wash away harmful bacteria and excess food particles. It's also a good way to help maintain fresher breath!

4.      Visit Your Dentist Regularly

Most people need to see their dentist every six months for checkups. When you come to see us, our dentist can assess your dental health carefully, and it's an excellent way to detect any changes since your last visit, such as signs of decay or gum disease. The earlier we can provide treatment, the better the outcome; in the longer term, it saves you time and money.

5.      Book a Hygiene Visit at the Same Time

When you schedule your dental checkup, be sure to book an appointment with our hygienist at the same time. Hygiene appointments are an excellent way to maintain strong teeth and healthy gums, get rid of plaque and tartar buildup, and leave you with that beautifully fresh, just been to the dentist feeling. After cleaning your teeth professionally, we also polish them gently, which is great for removing some surface stains and giving your smile that extra sparkle. A dental checkup and clean will probably only take an hour and is time everyone can afford to spend on maintaining a beautiful, healthy smile.
